Data Protection & Cookie Consent Guide
Practical implementation guide for via-veneto.ch
Purpose: This guide explains the practical steps to improve compliance with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP / DSG) and to implement a clear cookie consent setup for the website.
1. Update the Privacy Policy
The website already has a Privacy Policy. It should be expanded so that it clearly explains what personal data is processed, why it is processed, which external services are used, how long data is stored, whether data may be transferred outside Switzerland, which cookies or similar technologies are used, and what rights visitors have.
The responsible party should be identified clearly, for example: Via Veneto Restaurant, Zürcherstrasse 106, 8102 Oberengstringen, Switzerland; Phone +41 44 750 01 41; Email info@via-
veneto.ch.
Only services that are actually active should be listed, such as Framer, Google Maps, reservation tools, newsletter/email forms, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, or other third-party tools.
2. Check Which Cookies and Tracking Tools Are Active
Open the Via Veneto project in Framer and review Project Settings > Custom Code. Check whether any analytics, advertising, tracking, heatmap, CRM, or marketing scripts are installed.
Make a simple list of every third-party service that loads on the website. This list will determine which services must be described in the Privacy Policy and which services should be blocked until consent is given.
3. Review the Google Maps Integration
The website contains an embedded Google Maps element. External map content can transmit information to Google when it loads.
For stronger privacy protection, do not load Google Maps automatically. Show a placeholder first, with text such as: “Google Maps is blocked until you allow external content." Add a "Load Google Maps" button and load the map only after the relevant consent has been given.
The Privacy Policy should explicitly mention Google Maps if it remains embedded.
4. Install a Cookie Consent Banner
If the website uses non-essential cookies, analytics, marketing tools, or optional third-party content, install a cookie consent solution / Consent Management Platform (CMP).
The first-layer banner should provide clear choices such as "Accept All", "Reject Optional", and "Settings". Rejecting optional cookies should be as easy as accepting them.
5. Recommended Cookie Banner Text
Cookies & Privacy
"We use necessary technologies to operate this website. With your consent, we may also use analytics, external media, and marketing technologies to improve our website and services. You can accept all optional technologies, reject them or adjust your preferences at any time." Buttons: Accept All | Reject Optional | Settings
Include a visible link to the Privacy Policy.
6. Create Clear Cookie Categories
Necessary: Technologies required for the website to function. These remain active.
Analytics: For example Google Analytics or similar measurement tools. These should remain disabled until consent if they rely on non-essential cookies or identifiers.
External Media: For example Google Maps, YouTube, or other embedded third-party content. These should ideally load only after consent.
Marketing: For example Meta Pixel, Google Ads, TikTok Pixel or remarketing tools. These should remain disabled until the visitor gives consent.
7. Block Optional Services Before Consent
The cookie banner must do more than display information. Optional tracking and third-party services should be technically prevented from loading until the visitor has made the required
choice.
Example before consent: Google Analytics = blocked; Meta Pixel = blocked; advertising cookies = blocked; Google Maps = blocked or privacy-protected. After consent, only the selected categories may load.
8. Add the Consent Solution in Framer
Open the Framer project and add a suitable cookie consent component or external CMP. Place it globally so it appears on every relevant page.
Connect the Privacy Policy page and configure the categories: Necessary, Analytics, External Media, and Marketing.
Configure the buttons: Accept All, Reject Optional, and Settings.
Ensure that optional scripts only execute after the corresponding consent has been given.
9. Add a Permanent "Cookie Settings" Link
Visitors should be able to change their choice later. Add a permanent footer link that reopens the cookie preference panel.
Recommended footer structure: Privacy Policy | Impressum | Cookie Settings.
10. Review Newsletter Consent
If the website collects email addresses for a newsletter, explain clearly what the visitor is subscribing to.
Recommended wording: "By subscribing, you agree to receive news and offers from Via Veneto by email. You can unsubscribe at any time. Further information can be found in our Privacy Policy."
If possible, use double opt-in confirmation.
11. Test the Setup After Publishing
Open the website in a private/incognito browser window and confirm that the banner appears. Choose "Reject Optional" and verify that analytics, advertising tools and optional third-party
content do not load.
• Revisit the website and check that the choice is remembered.
Open "Cookie Settings", change the selection and verify that the new preference is respected. Test on desktop and mobile, including Safari and Chrome.
Important Implementation Note
A cookie banner should not be used only as a visual notice. The key technical requirement is that optional cookies, tracking technologies and third-party services are actually prevented from loading until the required consent has been given. For Via Veneto, the Google Maps integration, newsletter form and any analytics/marketing scripts should be reviewed carefully.
